Nowadays, its a lot easier to get UK style insurance cover in Spain. Whether you want insure your holiday home, your car, or get a health plan, there are a number of reputable companies in Spain that can provide you with competative insurance quotes and reliable claims procedures. In fact we know of some claims procedures here in Spain that are easier to deal with than you'd get in the UK!
The first thing you can probably save money on, if you haven't already come across it is annual travel insurance or multi-trip travel insurance. Rather than pay your travel agent or flight company £35 for single trip insurance cover, many online UK insurers are offering a full years cover for the whole family for any number of trips for less than £100, which could save a fair bit if you travel to Spain frequently. If you buy a property here in Spain, you'll need to arrange buildings and contents insurance, just as you would in the UK. Again, this needn't be arduous. There are good insurance brokers here around Elviria on the Costa del Sol that make this a painless process and surprisingly cheap.
Assuming you've got a car and you'll be driving in Spain longer than 30 days, you'll need to arrange Spanish Car Insurance. Most UK insurers insure your car for a maximum of 30 days abroad, so please check to be sure. The roads over here can be hairy, and you don't want to write off your pride and joy and find out that your 30 day foreign coverage has expired! You don't have to buy a Spanish left-hand drive car immediately when you get here. Spain allows UK residents to drive their UK plated right-hand drive car for 6 months without registering it with the Spanish equivalent of the DVLA. In fact, many Brits exploit the fact that the police don't check this too stringently and drive their British cars for years in Spain - not that we'd recommend that! But there are several companies that provide standard UK style car insurance for UK cars in Spain.
Spain has a national health care system similar to the UK, and Brits are covered under a reciprocal agreement. But many opt for a more inclusive Spanish private heathcare policy that will pay out for immediate operations and consultations rather than being put on the waiting list as is so often the case.
If you are running a business in Spain, then you'll need commercial insurance. Again a good insurance broker will have a range of suitable policies available.
And if you are lucky enough to own a yacht, a jet ski or a speedboat, there are plenty of marine insurance brokers.
